In just 10 years, the Lithuanian platform has become the leading peer-to-peer marketplace for second-hand clothing. It relies on 80 million members in Europe and North America, including 23 million in France alone. France is now Vinted’s leading market by number of users. This success has been made possible by a well-honed logistics operation. We spoke with Marie Marsaleix, Senior Director of Operations at Vinted Go.

What are the main logistics-specific characteristics of a second-hand marketplace?

Marie Marsaleix : Vinted is Europe’s largest online platform dedicated to peer-to-peer resale of second-hand clothing. Logistics primarily involves parcel transportation but, unlike traditional players in the fashion industry, there is no storage. One of the particularities of second-hand is that parcel packaging and labeling are handled by the sellers themselves. We measured the impact of purchasing second-hand items on the Vinted platform compared with buying new. Regarding packaging, the report found that 62% of sellers use recycled materials: this represents more than 17 kilotonnes of CO2 saved, or 70% fewer emissions. As for the label sellers must attach to their parcel, Vinted Go lockers allow it to be printed directly through an integrated printer. This provides an additional benefit. The Vaayu carbon-emissions tracking platform measured the impact of purchasing second-hand items on the Vinted platform compared with buying new.

How is your supply chain organized in France?

Marie Marsaleix :  Vinted has developed an international network, allowing French users, for example, to buy from Italian or Dutch sellers. In France, Vinted has expanded its logistics network by partnering with carriers that operate extensive networks of pickup points, giving more than 70% of the population access to Vinted. Since 2022, Vinted has strengthened its logistics operations by launching its own network of lockers and pickup points, along with the associated transport service. This in-house logistics network has so far been launched in France under the name Vinted Go. The Vinted Go network is operated from three warehouses in Paris, Lyon and Lille.

How does your logistics real-estate portfolio support Vinted’s dual promise of a circular economy and fast delivery?

Marie Marsaleix : Since its inception, Vinted has offered out-of-home delivery via lockers or pickup points, a more economical and environmentally friendly delivery method. The previously mentioned report on the carbon impact of second-hand shopping on Vinted also found that delivery to a pickup point or locker, rather than directly to the home, reduced emissions by 62%. Vinted Go has therefore opted for 100% out-of-home delivery, offering a mixed network of pickup points and lockers. Vinted Go lockers are a way to ensure proximity, flexibility and convenience for Vinted users, notably by enabling labels to be printed directly at the locker.

How do you reduce the environmental impact of your logistics operations and real estate in France?

Marie Marsaleix : Vinted Go works closely with real-estate partners, developers and operational teams to design and build sustainable properties. For example, the Paris logistics facility in Le Thillay (Val-d'Oise), covering around 1,300 sq. m, holds BREEAM Excellent certification. We also seek to invest in infrastructure such as electric-vehicle charging stations to reduce our carbon footprint. Vinted Go also works with landlords to establish partnerships for solar-energy generation, in order to reduce carbon emissions and improve our energy mix. The sourcing strategy is essential to account for our environmental impact. Our partners understand that we need transparency in supply chains so that we can measure our carbon emissions.

Do you have any ongoing or upcoming logistics development projects in France?

Marie Marsaleix : Although Vinted is present throughout France thanks to its network of carrier partners, Vinted Go has expanded into nearly 20 major cities since 2022, including Paris, Lille and Lyon, and more recently Reims, Metz and Toulon. One of our priorities for the coming years will be to expand Vinted Go throughout France.
